Parcel Delayed or Lost in Nepal? Here's What to Do

Two days have passed and your tracking page hasn't moved. Maybe it's your own order. Maybe it's a client in Pokhara who's messaged you three times asking where their parcel is. Either way, the question is the same: is this a normal delay, or is something actually wrong?

Here's the short version: almost every "delayed" parcel in Nepal is not lost. It's just slow. A rider stuck behind a landslide, a hub clearing a backlog after a busy Tuesday, a package that simply hasn't been scanned yet. These account for the vast majority of cases. Real losses are rare. But they do happen, and knowing how to tell the difference saves you a lot of unnecessary worry or a lot of wasted time waiting when you should have already reported it.

Quick answer: Give it 24 hours before checking in. After 48 hours with no tracking update, or once you've passed the promised delivery date, contact the courier. A parcel is only officially considered lost after 5 working days past the delivery date with zero tracking movement and no trace at the handling branch. If your parcel is with NCN Delivery, message your tracking number on WhatsApp, and the support team will look into it directly.

Is Your Parcel Really Delayed, or Just Not Scanned Yet?

Courier tracking in Nepal doesn't update in real time the way a food delivery app does. A parcel can physically be three streets away from you while the tracking page still says "in transit." Hubs scan packages in batches, not the moment they arrive, so a few quiet hours on the tracking page usually mean nothing at all.

A simple way to judge it:

  • Under 24 hours with no update: normal, don't worry yet.

  • 24 to 48 hours with no update: worth a quick check, but not urgent.

  • Past 48 hours, or past the promised delivery date: time to contact the courier.

The only exception here would be your same-day delivery in Kathmandu Valley, when there's already been some time passed after receiving no updates.

Why Parcels Actually Get Delayed in Nepal

Delays almost never mean your specific parcel is lost. They usually come down to a handful of ordinary, predictable causes:

  • Weather and road conditions. Monsoon rain and landslides on hill and mountain routes are the single biggest cause of delay, and there's genuinely nothing to do but wait it out.

  • Festival rush. During Dashain and Tihar, every courier network in the country is moving far more volume than usual. Parcels that would normally clear a hub the same day sit an extra day or two.

  • Incomplete address details. Missing ward numbers or landmarks slow riders down, especially outside the main city grid.

  • An unreachable phone number or a missed delivery attempt. If the receiver isn't available when the rider arrives, the parcel goes back for redelivery rather than being marked as a problem.

What To Do When Your Parcel Hasn't Moved

  1. Check your tracking number first. The tracking page itself sometimes explains the hold-up, such as a failed delivery attempt, a wrong address flag, or a hub transfer, before you need to contact anyone.

  2. Confirm your delivery address and phone number are correct and reachable. This is the single most common reason parcels stall.

  3. Message NCN Delivery on WhatsApp with your tracking number and a short description of the issue. It's the fastest channel, faster than email, and support usually replies the same day.

  4. Give it 24 hours after reporting. Once it's been flagged, the branch or rider handling your parcel gets contacted directly. Most delayed parcels start moving again within a day of being reported.

So When Does a Delay Actually Become a Lost Parcel?

A parcel is considered officially lost only when all of the following are true:

  • More than 5 working days have passed since the promised delivery date

  • There has been no tracking movement in that time

  • NCN Delivery has contacted the handling branch and the parcel cannot be located

If even one of those conditions isn't met, what you're dealing with is still a delay, not a loss, even if it feels like one after several days of silence. In practice, very few parcels ever reach true lost status. Most turn out to be an address issue, a pending redelivery, or a scan that simply hasn't been logged yet.

How to File a Claim

If your parcel genuinely meets the criteria above, filing a claim takes a few minutes and costs nothing.

  • Gather three things: your tracking number, proof of the item's value (receipt, invoice, or order confirmation screenshot), and the sender and receiver details used at booking.

  • Contact NCN Delivery and let them know the parcel has passed the delay threshold with no movement.

  • The claims team traces it, starting from the last scanned location and checking with the branch or rider who last handled it. This typically takes a couple of business days.

  • One of two outcomes follows. Most traced parcels are located and redelivered. If a parcel truly can't be found, the claim is settled based on the declared value, up to the limit covered by your shipping type.

Report it as soon as it crosses the threshold. The earlier a claim is opened, the easier it is to trace the parcel while the trail is still fresh.

How To Avoid Delays Before They Start

Most delay and loss headaches are prevented at the booking stage, not fixed after the fact:

  • Write your address the way you'd describe it to someone standing at your gate, including the ward number and a nearby landmark.

  • Use a phone number that's actually reachable during delivery hours.

  • Check your tracking page once a day. It's enough to catch a problem early without obsessing over it.

  • For anything valuable, use same-day delivery with same-day COD settlement so the parcel is delivered and paid for within the same day.

  • Keep the receipt or invoice for expensive items. You'll want it on hand if a claim ever comes up.

Still Waiting on Something?

In case your delivery status has not been updated for over a day now, contact us through WhatsApp with your tracking number, and we shall help you locate it. Normally, the parcel should have been relocated after a day of reporting its absence. In the case where your parcel has indeed gone AWOL (Absent Without Leave), filing a claim is a walk in the park, and all you have to do is get in touch with us.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can a parcel be delayed in Nepal before I should worry?

Wait for 24 hours without concern. Between 24 and 48 hours, a quick check-in is reasonable. Past 48 hours, or past the promised delivery date, contact the courier directly.

Why does my tracking page say "in transit" for so long?

The tracking system of couriers in Nepal works in batches at the hub. There will be instances when you see a stationary tracking page within several hours, which means nothing is wrong at all.

What's the most common reason for courier delays in Nepal?

Weather, specifically monsoon rain and landslides on mountain routes, causes the most delays, followed by the Dashain and Tihar festival rush and address or contact issues.

When is a parcel officially considered lost?

When more than 5 working days have passed since the promised delivery date, there's been no tracking movement, and the handling branch has been checked and can't locate it.

How do I file a lost parcel claim with NCN Delivery?

Message NCN Delivery on WhatsApp with your tracking number and proof of the parcel's value. The team traces the last scanned location and either redelivers the parcel or settles the claim based on its declared value.

Does filing a claim cost anything?

No. Filing a claim is free and takes a few minutes. Reporting the issue early gives the team more time to trace the parcel before the trail goes cold.

How can I prevent delays or losses in the future?

Write a complete address with ward number and landmark, use a reachable phone number, check tracking daily, and keep receipts for anything valuable you ship.
