You've packed your parcel, you're about to book domestic courier service in Nepal, and then the doubt creeps in. Will the courier actually accept this? What if it gets rejected at the hub, or worse, held back after pickup? This guide settles on what you can and cannot send through domestic courier service. Here is exactly what you can send, what you cannot, and what needs a little extra care.

Items You Can Freely Send via Domestic Courier in Nepal

Most everyday items can be sent without issues. The following list of items can safely be shipped within Nepal without problems.

  • Clothing/Fabrics — Shirts, ethnic outfits, shawls, bags, and all soft merchandise are acceptable for sending without restrictions.

  • Electronics/Gadgets — Mobile phones, laptop computers, accessories, and other small appliances can be sent via domestic courier services in Nepal if packed in a box, preferably in original packing.

  • Books, Documents, Stationery — Certificates, documentation, study material, and other printed matter are amongst the easiest items to send through a courier service.

  • Packaged Dry Food Items —Snacks, spices, tea, instant noodles, and other packaged food items can be dispatched without any problems.

  • Souvenirs/Handicrafts — Wood carvings, metal sculptures, pottery, and even thangka painting are items which get regularly shipped, however some will require additional packing.

  • Cosmetics —  Lipsticks, creams, face powder, and other sealed cosmetic products are acceptable.

  • Household Items — Kitchen ware and other house items can be dispatched.

If your item falls into any of these categories, proper packaging is usually the only thing you need before booking your courier shipment.

Items That Are Completely Prohibited

The following items are never accepted by any courier service in Nepal without exception. It’s just not worth risking the safety of your company and package.

  • Narcotics and regulated substances —Courier companies are legally responsible for ensuring prohibited items do not enter their network. Any item that even remotely resembles a drug is confiscated instantly.

  • Weapons, firearms, and explosives — Guns, ammunition, knives that exceed a certain size limit, and all other explosive materials are strictly prohibited.

  • Counterfeits products — Faked branded items would be rejected, and the repeated attempt would blacklist you from the courier service.

  • Currency and cash — No courier services provide insurance or accept cash payments in their shipments. If money has to be shipped, then better do it through banking or digital wallet.

  • Pornography — Prohibited by the distribution laws of Nepal in general, irrespective of the carrier.

  • Live animals —  Not suitable for domestic courier services. You need a special pet shipment service for this.

  • Dangerous goods – Corrosives, industrial chemicals, and flammable items would be rejected for safety reasons.

If you're unsure whether something falls into this list, it's always faster to ask before you pack than to have a parcel rejected after pickup.

Items That Are Allowed But Need Special Handling

It is here where people get confused. The listed items are neither prohibited nor dangerous, but they require proper packaging and/or declaration, or else they may be rejected or ruined during delivery.

  • Fragile items — Glass, pottery, ceramics, and electronics require professional-grade secure packaging. If you are packing the item yourself, use a rigid container with ample cushioning (like bubble wrap), as standard claims cannot be honored for self-packed items with improper padding. Alternatively, if you bring your items unpacked, NCN will handle the secure packaging for you at our hub.

  • Liquids — Oils, perfumes, and cosmetics should be tightly sealed and packaged in absorbent material around the product. A courier would likely refuse to deliver the item if it seems that there could be a chance of leaking because it could spoil other packages traveling in the same lot.

  • Medicine — Medicines can be delivered in Nepal without any paperwork needed when sending medicine in Nepal. If it is a prescription drug, it would be useful to include a copy of the prescription in the package.

  • Packaged food items vs. perishables — Packaged food is allowed. Anything that will get decay in just a few days will not be taken in by the typical domestic courier service because it may take between one day and several days to reach the recipient.

  • Lithium-ion batteries and power banks — Lithium batteries when placed in devices such as cell phones or laptops are acceptable.Policies differ between courier companies, but many do not accept standalone lithium batteries because of fire safety concerns.

If you’re unsure about any of these points, just ask the courier a quick question to avoid future rejections at delivery time.

What Happens If a Prohibited Item Is Found in Your Parcel?

In case your package gets anything from the list above, this is how the process usually works:

The package will be detained, and the courier will get in touch with you according to the information provided in the shipping label. In case of anything prohibited, the item might not be returned to you. As a sender, you are accountable for everything that is in your box, even if you have put it together for somebody else. Also, the courier is not responsible for the damage to the prohibited item since it must never have been shipped to begin with.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I send medicine by courier within Nepal?

Yes. Medicines can be sent through courier without customs documents. If it involves controlled or prescribed medicines, you should keep the prescription along with the item.

Can I send homemade food by courier?

Only sealed, non-perishable homemade food can be delivered, but not fresh or perishable homemade food since it might rot while being sent by courier.

Can I send a mobile phone by courier?

Yes. Mobile phones can be easily sent if packed in a box.

Can I send a power bank by courier in Nepal?

A lithium battery built inside a device, like a phone or laptop, is generally accepted. A standalone power bank shipped on its own is usually declined due to fire risk, though this can vary by courier company.

Can I send gold or jewelry by domestic courier?

Almost all couriers, including NCN, suggest not to ship expensive goods such as gold because they usually aren't included in parcel insurance. It would be better to inquire about it from the courier service.

What documents do I need to send a parcel in Nepal?

In case of domestic shipment, only the names, addresses, and phone numbers of the sender and receiver need to be mentioned on the shipping label.

Does NCN pack fragile items for me?

Yes. If you bring your items unpacked, NCN will securely package your parcel after pickup or at the drop-off hub using appropriate boxes and bubble wrap. You don't have to worry about finding the right packing materials yourself.
