Bus Parcel vs Nepal Post vs Courier: Which Is the Safest Way to Send a Parcel in Nepal?
Bus parcel, Nepal Post or private courier: which is safest for sending a parcel in Nepal? Compare tracking, pickup, door delivery, compensation, proof of delivery and COD before you send.

Your parcel leaves Gongabu bus park at 7 pm. By Monday morning, the receiver is calling you. All you have is a paper receipt and a bus number.

That is the real risk when you choose how to send a parcel in Nepal. The cheapest option is not always the safest. The safest option is not always the one you need.

This guide compares bus parcel, Nepal Post and private courier on six checks: tracking, pickup, door delivery, compensation, COD, and what you can do when a parcel goes missing.

We are a courier company, so we have a stake in this. We still point out where bus parcel and Nepal Post are the better choice.

Quick Answer: What Is the Safest Way to Send a Parcel in Nepal?

A private courier with tracking and proof of delivery is the safest way to send a parcel in Nepal. This is most true for valuable items, customer orders and COD parcels.

  • Bus parcel suits small, low-value items on one direct route.

  • Nepal Post suits documents and small parcels when the receiver can collect from a post office.

  • Courier suits everything where you need to know where the parcel is and who received it.

How We Compared Bus Parcel, Nepal Post and Courier

Safe means more than it arrived. We checked six things:

  • Tracking: Can you see where the parcel is?

  • Pickup: Who collects it from you?

  • Delivery: Does it reach the receiver's door?

  • Compensation: What happens if it is damaged or lost?

  • COD: Can the receiver pay on delivery, and who brings the money back?

  • Recourse: Who do you call when something goes wrong?

Bus Parcel Service in Nepal: How It Works

Bus parcel means you hand your parcel to a bus company's parcel counter, and it travels in the bus's cargo space. Rules and charges differ by bus company, so ask the counter before you send.

How to Send a Parcel by Bus in Nepal

  1. Take the parcel to the bus company's parcel counter at the bus park.

  2. Pay the charge and keep the receipt.

  3. Send the receiver the bus number, the time it left and your receipt details.

  4. The receiver collects the parcel from the bus counter at the destination.

When Bus Parcel Works Well

  • The item is small and low in value.

  • Both cities are on one direct bus route.

  • You and the receiver can both reach a bus park easily.

  • The item is not fragile and there is no COD involved.

Where Bus Parcel Goes Wrong

  • No live tracking. You depend on phone calls to the counter or the driver.

  • Bus park handover on both sides. The receiver must go to the bus park to collect.

  • COD is usually not available. The receiver pays you separately, which is risky for sellers.

  • Shared cargo space. Parcels travel with other cargo, so fragile items can get crushed.

  • Limited compensation. It depends on the bus company, so ask before you send.

Nepal Post Parcel Service: What You Actually Get

Nepal Post is the national postal service. Its parcel service accepts all kinds of items except prohibited ones.

Nepal Post Parcel Weight Limit and Booking

  • You book a parcel at the counter of a designated post office, not at every post office.

  • Weight caps depend on the parcel type. Nepal Post's parcel page lists limits of up to 10 kg and up to 20 kg. Ask the counter which cap applies to your parcel.

  • Prohibited items are not accepted. Check our list of items allowed and not allowed in domestic courier before you pack.

Nepal Post Parcel Tracking

You track Nepal Post items on the General Post Office website, gpo.gov.np. Domestic items use the domestic tracking page.

A domestic tracking number has 13 characters. A registered item looks like RD, then 9 digits, then NP. NP is the country code for Nepal. Enter the number exactly as printed on your receipt.

Ordinary mail has no tracking number. The post office can only search for it by name, address, and phone number.

Nepal Post EMS: Faster, but Limited to 45 Districts

EMS is Nepal Post's faster express service. Domestic EMS can be sent to 45 districts, including Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Chitwan, Kaski, Morang, Sunsari, Jhapa, and Rupandehi. It can be received in all 77 districts.

Nepal Post Delivery: The Intimation Card

After the parcel reaches the post office, the receiver gets an intimation card. They must bring that card and an ID to collect the parcel. So a Nepal Post parcel is not door-to-door by default.

Storage is free for the first 7 days after the intimation letter. After that it costs Rs 5 per day from day 8 to day 22, and Rs 10 per day from day 23. Collect early.

Nepal Post Proof of Delivery and Compensation

  • Proof of delivery: for domestic items, you file a written application with a Rs 10 stamp. The post office then traces the delivery record. It is not instant.

  • Compensation: the General Post Office FAQ says there is no compensation for an item lost through its Parcel service. That answer sits in the section on parcels sent abroad, so ask the parcel branch what applies to your domestic parcel. EMS has compensation rules.

When Nepal Post Makes Sense

  • Official documents that need a registered receipt

  • Small parcels when the receiver lives near a post office

  • Parcels that are not urgent

7 Ways to Make Any Parcel Safer in Nepal

  1. Pack for rough roads. Use a strong box, fill empty space and tape every seam.

  2. Write the full address. Add ward, tole, a clear landmark and two phone numbers.

  3. Take photos. Photograph the parcel and its contents before sealing.

  4. Keep your proof. Save the receipt or tracking number and share it with the receiver.

  5. Call the receiver first. Make sure someone is available to collect or accept it.

  6. Never send cash in a parcel. Use a bank or wallet transfer instead.

  7. Check prohibited items. See what you can and cannot send, and what to do if a parcel is damaged during delivery.

Why Online Sellers Should Avoid Bus Parcel for Customer Orders

A bus parcel is fine for a one-off item to a friend. For customer orders, you need records.

  • No COD collection. You chase the money yourself.

  • No proof of delivery. A customer can say they never received the order.

  • No tracking to share. You get more "where is my order?" messages.

  • Failed deliveries sit at the bus park. Returning the parcel is your job.

These problems push up your return rate. Learn how to reduce RTO in Nepal e-commerce, compare COD vs digital payments, and see our guide on courier for Instagram and Facebook sellers in Kathmandu.

FAQs: Bus Parcel, Nepal Post and Courier in Nepal

Is bus parcel safe in Nepal?

It can be safe for small, low-value items on one direct route. The risk is that you usually have no online tracking and compensation is limited. For valuable items or customer orders, a courier with tracking is safer.

Does Nepal Post deliver parcels to your door?

According to Nepal Post's parcel page, the receiver gets an intimation card and collects the parcel from the post office with an ID. Check with the post office whether door delivery is possible on your route.

Does Nepal Post pay compensation for a lost parcel?

According to the General Post Office FAQ, there is no compensation for items lost through its Parcel service. EMS has compensation. Ask the parcel branch what applies to your parcel before you send.

How do I track a Nepal Post parcel?

Enter the tracking number on the domestic tracking page of gpo.gov.np. A domestic registered number has 13 characters, for example RD, then 9 digits, then NP.

Can I track a bus parcel in Nepal?

Usually not online. You track it by calling the sending counter, the driver or the destination counter.

Can I send a COD parcel by bus?

Most bus parcel counters do not handle COD. Ask the counter before you promise COD to a customer. A courier with COD service collects the cash and returns it to you.

What is the safest way to send valuables in Nepal?

Use a private courier with tracking and proof of delivery. Photograph the item before sealing, keep your receipt, and do not send cash.

Which is better for online sellers, Nepal Post or courier?

A courier. Sellers need door delivery, tracking, COD and proof of delivery. Nepal Post parcels are collected by the receiver at a post office.
